Invalid kernel configuration

I'm trying to install a graphic card driver, and got the following error:

ERROR: Cannot create report: [Errno 17] File exists: '/var/crash/nvidia-304.0.crash' Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 4.4.0-193-generic (x86_64) Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-304/304.137/build/make.log

After checking the file located at /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-304/304.137/build/make.log the error says:

ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid."; \ echo >&2 " include/generated/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are missing.

I updated/installed build-essentials, dkms and source code (headers), as per this solution, but when attempting to install Nvidia got the same error as above, both in terminal and the make.log file.

I'd very much appreciate any help from anyone who -as opposed to me- does know about this.

If it helps/gives insight, this post by @timmmm had a similar problem, but I'm lost as to how to implement the fix.
